Madeleine Peyroux grew up in New York and California, moving with her mother to Paris when she was 13.

She gained experience as a teenager singing with street musicians and several early jazz bands (including the Riverboat Shufflers), making her recording debut in 1996 with Dreamland.

However it was in 2005 when she recorded her Careless Love album that Peyroux became well known.

While criticized for sounding like Billie Holiday (her speaking voice also sounds a bit like Lady Day so she was not imitating her but singing naturally), Peyroux has been a popular artist ever since, mostly performing original and recent material.

“Dance Me To The End Of Love” which was written by Leonard Cohen, is one of her most popular numbers; this live version is quite definitive.
