One of the most brilliant saxophonists of all time, Michael Brecker had remarkable technique, a full understanding of jazz’s history, and his own sound.

While in his early period he often appeared as a guest soloist on commercial records, he was always a superb jazz player which was particularly obvious after he began recording his own albums in the 1980s.

On “Delta City Blues” from 1998, Brecker unaccompanied for the first three minutes before his band (which includes pianist Joey Calderazzo) joins in.

Calderazzo takes a heated solo of his own and the band is tight and passionate, giving a perfect foundation for Michael Brecker’s dazzling flight.
