Jaco Pastorius (1951-87) is best remembered for his work with Weather Report and as a superb fusion electric bassist.

However throughout his career, Pastorius also often played straight ahead jazz standards.

On this film clip from 1985, the bassist leads a quintet that includes tenor-saxophonist Azar Lawrence and pianist John Davis on a straightforward version of Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin Dance.”

Davis and the powerful Lawrence take strong solos, Jaco looks youthful and plays with enthusiasm, and the quintet swings their way through the standard.

Personnel:

Jaco Pastorius, bass
Azar Lawrence, tenor
John Davis, piano
Paul Musavizideh, guitar
Paco Sery, drums
