In the mid-1940s, trumpeter Henry “Red” Allen led a particularly spirited group that fell between New Orleans jazz, swing and early r&b.

On this enjoyable Soundie from 1946, Allen plays and sings “House On 52nd Street” in a performance that also has spots for trombonist J.C. Higginbotham and altoist Dan Stovall.

This is fun music played by some of the best from the time.
