One of the leading avant-garde saxophonists of recent times, altoist Rudresh Mahanthappa grew up in Boulder, Colorado, graduated from Berklee, and worked with Vijay Iyer after moving to New York in 1997, becoming quite prominent in recent years.
His 2015 recording Bird Calls was an abstract tribute to Charlie Parker.
For this 2020 performance, Rudresh Mahanthappa is joined by bassist Francois Moutin and drummer Rudy Royston for a version of “I’ll Remember April” that has the melody played with an avant-funk rhythm, a dynamic and fairly free improvisation by the aloist over the assertive rhythm section, and a logical conclusion.
