Pianist Jay McShann (1916-2006) had a long career, leading a top Kansas City swing band that included the young Charlie Parker, settling in Los Angeles for a long period, helping to introduce Jimmy Witherspoon, leading occasional dates in the 1950s and ‘60s, and then spending his last 35 years with a whirlwind of activity.

McShann was equally skilled at blues and swing, emphasizing the former on this 1990 performance of Duke Ellington’s “I’ve Got A Lucky So And So.”

Played at a perfect medium slow tempo, McShann takes a bluesy solo, tenor-saxophonist Plas Johnson makes a relaxed and soulful statement, and bassist Milt Hinton keeps the mood going during his typically charming solo.
