At the 1997 Newport Jazz Festival Live By The Sea, a dream band was assembled that paid tribute to John Coltrane with a 26-minute version of “Impressions.”

With drummer Jack DeJohnette driving the ensemble for nearly a half-hour, each of the tenors takes their turn, with a couple of choruses of Coltrane’s original solo played by the four saxophonists between the solos.

Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, George Garzone and Joshua Redman each blow the roof off the venue with intense and powerful solos, climaxed by an explosive tradeoff.

Pianist Geoff Keezer also has a short spot while bassist Christian McBride helps DeJohnette keep the momentum and passion flowing.

Personnel:

Michael Brecker, tenor
Dave Liebman, tenor
George Garzone, tenor
Joshua Redman, tenor
Geoffrey Keezer, piano
Christian McBride, bass
Dave Holland, bass
Jack DeJohnette, drums
