Written by Duke Ellington in 1931, “In a Sentimental Mood” was written, said Ellington, at a party in the presence of two fighting women, in an attempt to calm them down. That Durham, North Carolina composing session utilized chromatic embellishment – static lines that operate independently but work in harmony when laid alongside each other.
