Jon Hendricks, the genius of vocalese, was one of the very few singers to record with Thelonious Monk, cutting “In Walked Bud” with Monk in 1968.
15 years later and one year after Monk’s death, Hendricks performed a new version of “In Walked Bud.”
For this stirring rendition from 1983, the singer utilizes his vocal group Jon Hendricks and Company plus Monk’s quartet of 1968 with tenor-saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Larry Gales, drummer Ben Riley and (in Monk’s place) pianist Walter Davis, Jr.
Hendricks scats, Rouse and Davis get solos, the vocalist trades off with Rouse, and there are some drum breaks from Riley.
The results are fun and will delight Thelonious Monk fans.
Personnel:
Jon Hendricks and Company, vocals
Charlie Rouse, tenor
Walter Davis, Jr, piano
