Joe Williams had his greatest success as a swinging blues singer, but he actually much preferred to sing ballads.

At a televised Duke Ellington Tribute concert at the Kennedy Center in 1981, Williams showed just how warm and emotional a singer he could be on this version of Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life.”

With accompaniment by the Billy Taylor Trio, Joe Williams puts his own stamp on Strayhorn’s classic song.
