Dave Liebman has always been both a prolific jazz performer and one who is open to the influences and inspirations of other genres of music.

“Here Comes The Sun King” finds Liebman exploring World Music with a group featuring Jamey Haddad on the doumbek (a kettle drum), guitarist Vic Juris and bassist Tony Marino.

The rhythmic piece features Marino’s bass setting a hypnotic vamp (alternating between 10/8 and 11/8 time) that sounds a bit like an Indian raga.

With Liebman soloing over the top on soprano (his inventive repetitions fit in perfectly with the rhythm section), this performance from the early 1990s is quite fascinating.

Personnel:

Dave Liebman, soprano sax
Vic Juris, guitar
Tony Marion, bass
Jamey Haddad, doumbek

– Scott Yanow
