The classic version of the Pat Metheny Group, the quartet with the leader-guitarist, keyboardist Lyle Mays, bassist Mark Egan, and drummer Danny Gottlieb, was together during 1977-79 (although Gottlieb remained with the band until 1982).

They became extremely popular while criss-crossing the globe, performing a style of modern jazz that was impossible to classify accurately.

Here is the quartet in 1977 performing “Jaco,” an spirited number that is a tribute to Jaco Pastorius.
