Drummer Roy Haynes has had a rather remarkable career to say the least.

Who else was a member of the Charlie Parker Quintet, subbed regularly for Elvin Jones with the John Coltrane Quartet, and worked with Chick Corea and Pat Metheny, not to mention Luis Russell, Bud Powell, Lester Young, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk, Jackie McLean, Gary Burton and Sonny Rollins?

Roy Haynes turned 96 in 2021 and is still active as of this writing.

Here he is back in 1966, featured on “Jazz Hoot” with the Stan Getz Quartet which also includes vibraphonist Gary Burton and bassist Steve Swallow.

Roy Haynes takes a creative solo that becomes more explosive as it progresses, showing why he is now mentioned in the same breath with Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Tony Williams.
