Shirley Horn was riding high when she performed at the 1992 Newport Jazz Festival.

The singer-pianist had made a strong impression in the early 1960s but then took many years off to raise her daughter, only making one recording during 1966-77.

After signing with the Verve label in 1987, she quickly became a household name in jazz and was busy during her final 18 years.

While famous for performing slow ballads, Shirley Horn could also swing on medium-tempo tunes as she shows on this version of “Just In Time.”

Wearing gloves while playing piano, she is joined by her regular sidemen of the time: bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams.
