Mel Torme was one of the very few performers who seemed to get stronger and more creative throughout his sixties.
63 at the time of his appearance at the 1989 Newport Jazz Festival, Torme is joined by pianist George Shearing, bassist Neil Swainson, and Donny Osborne for the opening number of their set, “Just One Of Those Things.”
Torme’s version of the vintage standard is conversational even when he is scatting, begins and ends hot, and has a surprising wistful middle section that is quite effective.
