Antonio Carlos Jobim Day

January 25, 1927 – December 8, 1994

A tribute to the bossa-nova composer

Composer, singer and pianist Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim was born on January 25, 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Early on, Jobim played music in nightclubs and bars, also working as an arranger for a record label.

He first became well known in 1956 when he co-wrote music for the play Orfeu da Conceicao, later helping write the score for the 1959 film Black Orpheus.

While Jobim’s music was becoming well-known in Brazil thanks in part to the recordings of singer-guitarist Joao Gilberto, he became internationally famous when he contributed music and played piano for the 1963 album Getz/Gilberto with Stan Getz and Joao and Astrud Gilberto including “The Girl From Ipanema.”

Antonio Carlos Jobim’s many popular compositions defined bossa-nova not only in the 1960s but to the present day, resulting in Brazilian songs becoming a part of many jazz artist’s repertoire; one could consider him the last of the major contributors to the “Great American Songbook.”

Among the Jobim songs that became standards are “A Felicidade,” “Waters Of March,” “No More Blues,” “Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars” (Corcovado”), ”One Note Samba,” “Someone To Light Up My Life,” “Desafinado,” “Dindi,” “Fotografia,” “How Insensitive,” “If You Never Come To Me,” “Once I Loved,” “O Grande Amor,” “So Danco Samba,” “Triste,” “Wave,” and of course “The Girl From Ipanema.”

Although most of his hit songs became popular in the 1960s, Jobim continued composing new works up until the time of his death in 1994.

Here is a full set of music from the 1986 Montreal Jazz Festival with Antonio Carlos Jobim performing 13 of his songs.
