Written by Walter Donaldson, with Gus Kahn lyrics, “Love Me or Leave Me” saw its debut in the 1928 musical “Whoopee!” In addition to Nina Simone, other covering artists have included Ella Fitzgerald (just two years after this performance), Anita O’Day, Billy Eckstine, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, and Miles Davis.

What makes Simone’s rendition particularly unique is its incorporation of Bach in the solo.
