Benny Goodman, the King Of Swing, had been a household name for nearly 25 years when he appeared on the Perry Como Show in 1959.
The 50-year old clarinetist had a particularly strong combo that year although he was always the main soloist.
Goodman performs a medley of hits that includes brief versions of “Memories Of You,” “Don’t Be That Way,” “Stompin’ At The Savoy,” “On The Sunny Side Of The Street” (with Flip Phillips taking the melody), “Moonglow” (with Red Norvo) and “One O’Clock Jump” before really cooking on a rapid rendition of “After You’ve Gone.”
Goodman and Norvo are the only soloists on the latter although the clarinetist does get to introduce his sidemen before joining Como on a short “Now You Has Jazz.”
The band consists of the clarinetist, vibraphonist Red Norvo, trumpeter Jack Sheldon, trombonist Bill Harris, Flip Phillips on tenor, altoist Jerry Dodgion, pianist Gene DiNovi, guitarist Jimmy Wyble, bassist Red Wooten, and drummer John Markham.
