Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin’” was immortalized by Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan and Benny Golson in 1958.
65 years later, the song is still a standard.
Pianist Emmet Cohen, on one of his now legendary online weekly programs, plays his own soulful version of “Moanin’’,” taking the song a little bit slower than customary and creating a solo worthy of Timmons at his best.
Also featured are trumpeter Terell Stafford (who makes a blazing statement), altoist Dick Oatts, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kyle Poole.
