Written by Bobby Timmons, and first recorded by this group in 1958, “Moanin’” has since become a jazz standard. Off an album with the same name, the song is featured here in a 1962 performance recording.

A year before this tape, Freddie Hubbard — just 24 years old during this performance — had replaced Lee Morgan on trumpet for the Jazz Messengers.

Personnel:

Freddie Hubbard, trumpet
Wayne Shorter, saxophone
Curtis Fuller, trombone
Cedar Walton, piano
Reggie Workman, bass
