At the 2004 Newport Jazz Festival, quite an all-star group was gathered to pay tribute to John Coltrane.
For a version of “Moment’s Notice,” one of Coltrane’s finest compositions, pianist McCoy Tyner was joined by both Ravi Coltrane and Michael Brecker on tenors, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Roy Haynes.
Ravi Coltrane makes a solid statement, Brecker builds up his improvisation to a pretty ferocious level, Tyner is typically masterful, and McBride (who would someday be running the Newport Jazz Festival) gets a chorus before the tenors take the song out.
