Cornetist Nat Adderley often referred to his “Work Song” as his retirement song since it was the best known of his originals.

The 1963 Cannonball Adderley Sextet (all but Yusef Lateef who sits this performance out) stretches out on Nat’s opus with heated and explorative solos by altoist Cannonball, Nat and pianist Joe Zawinul.

While Cannonball and Zawinul play well, Nat Adderley steals the show with his fiery and colorful improvisation.

This performance took place before a large crowd in Lugano, Switzerland.

Personnel:

Cannonball Adderley, alto sax
Nat Adderley, cornet
Joe Zawinul, piano
Sam Jones, bass
Louis Hayes, drums

– Scott Yanow
