Big Joe Turner

The famous blues singer shouts out a blues at the Apollo Theater

Big Joe Turner (1911-85) sang in an accessible and unchanged style for decades and managed to fit easily into several eras of music.

Whether it was boogie-woogie with Pete Johnson, early r&b, lowdown blues, or all-star jazz sessions, Turner stayed busy during his 50-year career.

On this spirited film clip, performed live at the Apollo Theater in the early 1950s, Turner sings and shouts a blues with backing by the Paul Williams Orchestra.
