An exhilarating performance of a Sonny Rollins tune

In the mid-1950s, Sonny Rollins’ composed “Oleo,” his run through on the chord changes of “I Got Rhythm.”

The song has been played many times since but this version by the Keith Jarrett Trio (with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette) is one of the most spirited renditions.

While Jarrett hints at Bud Powell in spots, he also turns the piece inside out, particularly rhythmically, with Peacock and DeJohnette offering plenty of stimulating musical commentary.

Their constant smiles tell the story.
