One of the greatest jazz violinists of all time, Stephane Grappelli (1908-97) toured the world many times and made quite a few recordings, with Django Reinhardt in his early days and as a leader during his last half-century.
Even many of Grappelli’s fans probably did not realize that piano was his first instrument.
Grappelli rarely played piano in concert but fortunately there were a few exceptions including this fascinating, spontaneous, and impressive medley (which includes “Satin Doll” and “Tea For Two”) that in spots recalls Art Tatum.
This is a real surprise.
