Joey DeFrancesco (1971-2022) was one of the top jazz organists of all time and a successor to Jimmy Smith, his main early influence.
DeFrancesco’s mastery of his instrument was obvious, whether playing an uptempo romp, a heartfelt ballad, or an infectious groove.
On “One Hundred Ways,” DeFrancesco and his trio, featuring guitarist Dan Wilson and drummer Jason Brown, demonstrate tightness and a cohesive groove. The performance showcases impressive solos on both the organ and guitar. Pay special attention to DeFrancesco’s cadenza and the final section of the song.
