Sarah Vaughan had one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century.

She could stay up all night partying and then perform flawlessly the next day, never making a misstep or hitting a note that was less than beautiful.

While she was a superb jazz singer, she had the technical tools to be an opera singer if she had desired to make that her career.

Here is Sarah Vaughan on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957, performing a luscious and definitive version of the 1916 ballad “Poor Butterfly.”
