Trumpeter-flugelhornist Tom Harrell has overcome major health problems to have a very viable and significant career.

After gaining experience playing with Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Horace Silver, and the Lee Konitz Nonet, he spent six years as a key member of the Phil Woods Quintet.

Harrell, who has led at least 34 albums since 1976 (all but two since 1984), has been mostly heard with his own band during the past 30 years.

His 2008 quintet with tenor-saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Johnathan Blake stretches out on Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-A-Ning” with Grissett laying out during the horn solos although the pianist also has a fine spot.

Harrell and Escoffery are heard in particularly excellent form in the sparse setting.
