An explorative version of a ballad

Joe Lovano has been a very significant tenor-saxophonist on the jazz scene since the early 1980s.

While influenced a little by Sonny Rollins, Lovano has had his own sound for decades and always sounds like himself, whether playing hard bop or freer explorations.

For this inventive version of “Portrait Of Jenny,” the tenor is joined by pianist Kenny Werner, bassist Scott Lee, and drummer Jeff Williams at the 1994 Montreux Jazz Festival.

The heated performance is topped off by Lovano’s closing cadenza.
