Conte Candoli (1927-2001) was one of the great bebop trumpeters but, because he was based in Los Angeles rather than New York, he is often overlooked in the jazz history books.

Candoli was a major asset to the big bands of Wood Herman and Stan Kenton, worked with the Lighthouse All-Stars and Gerry Mulligan’s Concert Jazz Band, was a busy studio musician who appeared on a countless number of records, and was a longtime member of the Tonight Show Band during the Johnny Carson years.

Pete Jolly (1932-2004) was also a longtime fixture on the West Coast, guesting with others and leading a trio that for decades included bassist Chuck Berghofer.

Candoli, Jolly, Berghofer, and drummer Joe LaBarbera (a member of Bill Evans’ last trio) team together sometime in the 1990s for this version of Candoli’s swinging samba “Secret Passion.”
