Charles Lloyd, who became a big name in the 1960s when he worked with the Chico Hamilton Quintet, Cannonball Adderley, and led a notable quartet that included the young Keith Jarrett, has had a long and significant career.
As he entered his eighties, he still had his warm and distinctive sound on tenor and was playing vital music with musicians much younger than himself.
This early 2020 performance, which utilizes some trick photography, has Lloyd leading a quintet that also includes pianist Gerald Clayton, and guitarist Julian Lage; the 80-year old tenor makes a heartfelt statement on a quietly emotional piece.
