Rhythm-a-Ning

Idris Muhammad

New Orleans Rhythm

Despite what this broadcaster erroneously claimed in the video, this song is not “Bessie’s Blues” by John Coltrane but rather “Rhythm-a-Ning.”

A Thelonious Monk composition that first appeared on a 1957 Monk-Gerry Mulligan album, “Mulligan Meets Monk,” “Rhythm-a-Ning” has since been covered by Chick Corea, Dexter Gordon and Art Blakey.

Personnel:

Idris Muhammad, drums
Chico Freeman, sax
Nathan Davis, sax
Arthur Blythe, sax
Sam Rivers, sax
Don Pullen, piano
Santi Debriano, bass
