Poncho Sanchez has been an important force and fixture on the Latin jazz scene for over 40 years.
The conguero gained experience playing with his idol Cal Tjader’s band, first began recording as a leader in 1979, and has had a longtime association with the Concord label since 1982.
Sanchez’s group always fills up clubs in the Southern California area, playing a brand of Afro-Cuban jazz that is a logical outgrowth of the 1950s Latin music of Tjader, Tito Puente and Machito.
The infectious “Shing A Ling” from 2005 has a rhythmic vocal by Sanchez and his band members along with a strong trombone solo from Francisco Torres and a featured spot for the leader on congas.
