Missouri native Coleman Hawkins was one of the first musicians to define the tenor sax as a jazz instrument. Miles Davis credited listening to Hawkins with teaching him how to play ballads.
In New York City, in the ’40s, Hawkins would begin his collaborations with pianist Thelonious Monk and drummer Max Roach. Along with Roach and trumpet giant Dizzy Gillespie, in the mid-’40s Hawkins took part in what many critics consider the first bebop recordings ever.
