An exciting trumpet battle

On the face of it, it was not completely fair.

Jon Faddis (who was 37 at the time of this 1990 performance) could always hit stratospheric high notes with ease.

Doc Cheatham (who was 85) was more than double Faddis’ age but still sounded remarkably ageless in his playing and played with dignity and wit.

On “Struttin’ With Some Barbecue” (with Faddis often quoting Louis Armstrong’s 1927 solo), the two trumpeters battle it out with Cheatham somehow holding his own.

The pianist was pretty good too: George Wein.
