“The Lamp Is Low” was originally adapted from Maurice Ravel’s “Pavane pour une infant defunte” in the 1930s by Peter DeRose and Bert Shefter, turning the pretty classical melody into popular music and ultimately jazz.

Patrick Bartley, a top up-and-coming young alto-saxophonist (he turned 30 in 2023), is originally from Hollywood, Florida, played clarinet and baritone-sax before settling on alto, made his first album as a leader in 2015, and has worked with Jon Baptiste

During a performance with pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and drummer Kyle Poole, he pays respect to the melody of “The Lamp Is Low” before the performance becomes a cooker that is highlighted by his blazing alto solo.
