Joshua Redman, best known for his tenor playing, has led and appeared with many groups since he first emerged on the jazz scene in 1991.

In 2002, Redman, keyboardist Sam Yahel and drummer Brian Blade teamed up for the album Elastic, a set of originals that included “The Long Way Home.”

The same trio with Redman on soprano-sax performs “The Long Way Home” in a live version that explores several moods.

This concise rendition begins as a medium-tempo ballad, gets a bit funky, features close interplay between the three musicians, and gets more passionate the longer it develops.
