Like Louis Armstrong, Dupree was a alumnus of the New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs where he taught himself piano.

He was a spy boy for the Yellow Pochahantas Mardi Gras Indian tribe. (If you don’t know what that means, it will take an hour to explain, other than to say it’s a serious role given to serious people.)

Where did he get the name Champion?

Joe Louis encouraged him try his hand as a boxer which he did. He fought in 107 bouts, was Golden Gloves champ and won other championships too.

Along the way, he spent two years as a POW of the Japanese during World War II.

See what I mean about being a serious guy?

He moved to Europe in 1960 and other than a few visits back to the states spent the balance of his life there.

His exact age was never clear, but based on various birth dates and birth days thrown around (he too claimed like Louis Armstrong to have been born on the 4th of July), he was at least 82 when he passed.
