During 1971-72, the Giants Of Jazz traveled the world.

The term “Giants” was certainly not an overstatement for this group for it consisted of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, altoist and tenor-saxophonist Sonny Stitt, trombonist Kai Winding, pianist Thelonious Monk, bassist Al McKibbon, and drummer Art Blakey.

Here is the all-star bebop band (all of whom were still in their prime) playing Gillespie’s late 1940s piece “Woody ‘n You” at an October 30, 1971 concert in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

After the melody, there are heated solos by Stitt on alto, Winding, Gillespie (in excellent form), and the always very original Monk, all powered by the intense and hard-swinging drumming of Blakey.
