Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson (1928-2006) was famous for decades for his phenomenal high-note playing but he was also a well-rounded musician in addition to being an influential bandleader and a cheerleader for many younger musicians.

While he explored more commercial styles with a great deal of success in the 1970s, he returned to bop in his later years with his Big Bop Nouveau Band.

On the uptempo blues “You Got It,” the 69-year old Ferguson features trombonist Tom Garling and keyboardist Dan Zank but also has time to blast out some miraculous high notes of his own.
