Juke Boy at Montreux ’75

Weldon Bonner

Juke Boy Bonner (harmonica, guitar & vocals) plays a set at the 1975 Montreux Jazz Festival consisting of the three songs “Mojo Hand”, “Rock Me Mama”, and “I’m A Blues Man.”

Weldon ‘Juke Boy’ Bonner started his career in music as teenager in Texas when he won the first prize at weekly talent show at the Lincoln Theater in Houston in 1948. This gained him enough publicity to secure a 15 minute radio slot on a show operated by record retailer Henry Atlas. Bonner recorded several singles in the mid-1950’s for Irma record in Oakland, and in 1960 recorded for number of labels including Storyville Records. Tragedy struck in 1963 when he was diagnosed with a large stomach ulcer, and had to have surgery resulting in the removal of nearly half his stomach. Following his recovery Bonner found work as an RCA record distributor in Houston, and in 1967 released his first album.
