Lonesome Sundown

“The sound of the swamp”

Cornelius Green held a string of labor jobs between Donaldsonville and New Orleans, Louisiana throughout his teens into adulthood playing music in his free time. In 1955 was invited to sit in with the “Zydeco Ramblers” by Clifton Chenier at the Blue Moon Club in Lake Charles and afterwards was offed the position of second guitarist in the band. After traveling with Chenier as far as Chicago and Los Angeles he left the band and got married later the same year.

While living in Opelousas, Louisiana he began writing his own material and playing with Lloyd Reynauld. Record producer J. D. “Jay” Miller in Crowley, LA listend to his demo tape and gave the singer & guitarist the stage name “Lonesome Sundown”. Soon after he recorded his debut single “Leave My Money Alone”/”Lost Without Love”, released on Excello Records in 1956. By 1965 however he lost interest in the music industry and returned to work fulltime.

His sombre instantly recognizable style were described by Miller as “the sound of the swamp”.
