Jimmy Smith (1928-2005) was the king of jazz organists; his rise to fame in 1956 was a major factor in making the organ into a major instrument in jazz.
There are some who criticize jazz for allegedly being too esoteric and only being understandable and enjoyable to those who study music.
This film clip of Jimmy Smith with the Blue Note Jazz Band performing Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin’” in Japan is evidence to the contrary.
The enthusiasm of the audience inspires the musicians and Smith, who is in top form, was clearly having a great time, enjoying the crowd’s reaction to the music.
