Alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman (1930-2015) was one of the true innovators in jazz history, showcasing the possibility of playing freely improvised music without chord changes or restrictions.
In 2009, he performed at a tribute concert held at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
This documentary features Coleman’s performances (on alto saxophone and trumpet) in excerpts from the concert, as well as comments from numerous notable musician fans including Flea, Sean Lennon, Moby, Robert Wyatt, Vernon Reid, David Murray, Yoko Ono, Carla Bley, and James Blood Ulmer.
It leaves one hoping that the full concert, which must have been truly memorable, will be available someday.
