All The Things You Are – 1979

Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz

A relaxed version of the standard

The Nice Jazz Festival in 1979 assembled quite an all-star band.

Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was joined by tenor-saxophonist Stan Getz, altoist Arnie Lawrence, pianist John Lewis, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Shelly Manne.

On their version of “All The Things You Are,” after Dizzy leads the melody, Getz plays some heated ideas (showing that he was much more than just a cool-toned tenor) while still retaining his beautiful sound.

Gillespie sounds inspired and takes an explosive solo, Lewis sounds as dignified as he looks, Lawrence gets stronger the longer he plays, and Duvivier has a nice spot.
