For a special filmed concert in 1975, cornetist Jimmy McPartland and pianist Marian McPartland were the nominal leaders.

But in reality any of the players could have been picked as leaders.

The all-star group includes three veterans from the 1920s (Jimmy McPartland, trombonist Siegel Willox, and violinist Joe Venuti) in addition to Dick Cary on alto horn, clarinetist Jack Maheu, bassist Major Holley, and drummer Cliff Leeman.

Of the many soloists on “Avalon,” Venuti and Marian McPartland (who strides during much of her second chorus) take honors along with the joyful ensembles.
