In 1978, trombonist Joseph Bowie founded Defunkt, a group that mixed together funky rhythms, dense ensembles worthy of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time, and a punk sensibility.

“Avoid The Funk,” from a 1981 performance in Germany, has rhythmic singing by Bowie, heated guitar solos from both Kelvyn Bell and Richard Martin, and thunderous electric bass playing by Kim Clarke.

It concludes with some high-note trombone playing by Bowe that Trombone Shorty would enjoy.

Personnel:

Joseph Bowie, trombone, vocals
John Mulkerin, trumpet
Kelvyn Bell, guitar
Richard Martin, guitar
Kim Clarke, bass
Kenny Martin, drums
