Trumpeter Wynton and tenor-saxophonist Branford Marsalis have only played together on an occasional basis since the 1980s, but whenever they do, musical magic occurs.
During a concert at the Apollo Theater in 2004, the power went off (candles had to be used), but there was no shortage of energy onstage.
Playing “Hesitation” (which utilizes the chord changes of “I Got Rhythm”), the two brilliant horn players engage in a battle of over four minutes, having quite a musical conversation.
Pianist Eric Lewis contributes a passionate solo of his own, while bassist Reginald Veal and drummer Herlin Riley keep up the rapid tempo.
