Norman Granz’s traveling jam session of all-time greats, Jazz At The Philharmonic (JATP), was in its prime during 1944-58.

By Nov. 25, 1960 when this performance from a Paris concert took place, Granz was mostly booking European tours with the group.

This stirring version of “Indiana” has solos from tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, altoist Benny Carter, Don Byas (a top tenor who had moved to Europe in 1946), the typically exciting trumpeter Roy Eldridge, bassist Art Davis, and drummer Jo Jones, with pianist Lalo Schifrin playing in support.

Jones’ four-minute solo climaxes the fine performance.

Personnel:

Roy Eldridge, trumpet
Benny Carter, alto
Coleman Hawkins, tenor
Don Byas, tenor
Lalo Schifrin, piano
Art Davis, bass
Jo Jones, drums
