Jazz Scene USA – 1962

Barney Kessel

A half-hour performance by one of bop’s finest guitarists

In 1962, Jazz Scene USA ranked with the finest jazz television series ever; the half-hour programs featured a top jazz group and usually an interview of the leader by host Oscar Brown Jr.

On Oct. 1, 1962, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Buddy Woodson, and drummer Stan Levey were featured on an uptempo “Gypsy In My Soul,” “Fly Me To The Moon” (then still known as “In Other Words” and one of this program’s highpoints), “April In Paris,” an unaccompanied “Danny Boy,” “One Mint Julep,” and “Give Irving My Love.”

The trio was tight, the interview with Kessel is well worth seeing, and the guitarist is heard in top form throughout.
